ArkBlack and Old-Fashion Limbertwig are the only apple cultivars that
set any fruit this year that hasn't already ripened, and I haven't even
looked at the ABs this season, but in year past, the hornets have pretty
effectivelly eviscerated all the AB fruits by the end of Sept.
My reply:
A while back I posted a thread about "fermenting apples". An old timer I
talked to in Indiana a few weeks back told me they "fermented" Arkansas Black
because its thick skin allowed it to do so very easily. I wonder if your
fruit is converting from starch to sugar on the tree and attracting the
hornets. Normally not a darn thing bothers the tough skin on Arkansas
Black...but I know Arkasas Black will hand long after it is ripe...
