Took off for a jaunt through the woods behind the office today at
lunch. Looks like as good a crop of pawpaw set this year as I've seen in
several years. Most are not ripe yet - probably another week or more off
from being ready. Think I found two that had dropped or been knocked out
already.
I'll usually give the trees a good shake, and if any fall out, I figure
they're pretty close to being ripe - if not, I'll give 'em a few days and
come back.
Did find a few growing on a sunny, exposed section of creekbank that had
singles & doubles that were pretty sizeable, and would yield slightly to
finger pressure, so I picked those while I was out.
Must be mating season for the box turtles - saw two pair in different
clumps of pawpaw trees.
