My questions: Who's fruiting kakis in Zone 6, under what conditions?
Which cultivars are favored?
Anyone taking these to market?
Anyone other than Edible Landscaping selling cold-hardy kaki plants?
Richard,
I'd had several kaki varieties grafted & growing - Giombo,
Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro, Jiro, Izu, Fuyu, Hana Fuyu, Matsumoto Wase Fuyu, Sheng,
Saijo, Great Wall, as well as some of Dr. Greenleaf's selections, made at
Auburn U.; some were 2- 3 years old, others only one year old grafts, but
all died out during the winter just past - except for a piece of Great Wall
and Saijo that I had stuck onto a vigorous sucker from a native tree I'd
bush-hogged several years ago, up by my woodland pond - the grafts on these
two were about 6 ft off the ground, whereas all those in the nursery or
orchard were less than a foot above ground.
Cliff England has some kaki selections growing at his place at McKee, KY,
including some Korean persimmons he's grown from seed and has
selected. http://www.nuttrees.net
