Regarding currants...
My kids eat Skittles and Starburst candies which are tart. Putting 2+2 I had them try some red
currants and they love them.

I have found them quite productive (if I make sure
I prune to the weakest growing branches) and tasty
if left to darken enough. However I don't believe
them to be as good as Currants.
