With pecans, to avoid bleeding and 'drowning or souring' of the graft, it is
recommended that the stock tree be cut off and left to bleed until it
ceases. Then make a fresh cut and graft at that time. I once had a pecan
bleed for 9 days, then a man who had never grafted before put on two grafts
and they both lived.
