Summer pruning affects the hormones in trees differently than winter
pruning. Winter pruning promotes the growth of new branches. Summer
pruning promotes the growth of new fruit spurs. The Lorette System of
pruning is a set of guidelines that can potentially control the tree size
while increasing fruit production. It's more of an art than a science, but
summer pruning has been more successful for me than winter pruning. Here is
a link to some pictures that may help. http://home.earthlink.net/~piper3/fruitref.html
I plan on doing my first pruning sometime in the next month.
