Subject: [NAFEX] LIST UPDATE FOR 4/30/02 (Also, the "password thing)"
Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 20:16:33 -0800
The transition seems to be coming along satisfactorily. No messages
posted to the old list today, so it seems that most people have made
the transition (at least those not on vacation during the last week.)
Several questions have arisen regarding passwords. Just what are
they needed for?
THINGS NOT EFFECTED BY PASSWORDS.
1. As a member of this list you will get all messages posted to the
list (unless you set the "no mail" option.) So for many people, the
password isn't really that much of a part of the operation of the
list.
2. Accessing and downloading list archives.
So, despite all the noise about keeping your password, most people
wil get what they want without using their passwords. However, there
are things that do require passwords.
PASSWORDS ARE NECESSARY FOR THE FOLLOWING.
1. Changing user options. Examples are changing to/from DIGEST
mode, NOMAIL mode (vacation hold), unsubscribing.
2. Once set up, ftp (uploading/downloading) files like pictures of
disease problems etc. will most likely be password dependent.
PASSWORD QUICK FACTS.
1. You can always get your password if you forget it. First, it is
emailed to you every 30 days, along with other list reminders. You
can also go to you user page http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/options/nafex/XXXX@XXXX
(where XXXX@XXXX is *your* email address) and have your password sent
to your email. All this and many links are listed at the bottom of
each message (where the Yahoo ads used to be.)
2. Since your password is emailed to you as plain text, it is
probably a good idea not to use a "critical" password, like your
password for on-line banking, etc.
3. You can change your password to something of your liking at your
user page. You will need the old password to do this.
