The Japanese Rasin Tree (Hovenia Dulcis) grows here in zone 9 and is a
large, nice looking tree. I don't know its range but is listed as generally
grown in zones 8-10. It does not bear rasins. It has a brownish,
serpentine, and irregular flower stalk a few inches long which may be eaten
if you don't mind a cruchy and insipid taste which to me, is nothing like a
rasin. The tree may be propagated by seed but the seeds generally requires
some scarification to germinate and a brief dip in sulfuric acid has been
recommended. It is said to be able to serve as a non-stoloniferous
rootstock for the jujube but I have not seen definitive information on this
claim. Hope this is helpful.
Regards, Ethan
