Around town, M.alba predominates, being an invasive (alien)
tree. However, as I was driving home from 4-H rifle practice yesterday
afternoon, I took a different route and all along the gravel road, at the
edge of the woods, were numerous young M.rubra trees - didn't see fruit on
any of them, but I may have already missed that window of opportunity.
I stopped by a number of big old weeping mulberries, planted in big brick
planters at the edge of the parking lot of one of the older shopping
centers in town last weekend and ate my fill of mulberries - my hands were
purple by the time I got done.
Looking forward to the fruits on my Illinois Everbearing and Wellington
ripening in the next couple of weeks
