Festooning is the tying down of upright-growing shoots to the base of the
same shoot, thus forming a circle
from the vigourous shoot. It slows the growth of too-vigourous shoots and
speeds fruit bud formation. I used
it extensively on pears. It looks weird, but it is far preferable to pruning
(dormant or summer) for various
reasons. It is of less value for shoots that are in an undesirable location
regardless, but even in this case,
can be beneficial cause you don't lose the photosynthetic area you would by
summer pruning, and you
reduce the amount of wood that must be removed the following winter. It
ain't for everyone, though, 'cause it
is more labor intensive than whacking off limbs once a year. I found it
relaxing, since I only had about an
acre of orchard.
