Excellent point Alice!
Sadly we only have one mule that is MSAR certified on
our team: It is an excellent MSAR mount! However, we do not
deploy a solo rider due to our team's mission safety plan, so a horse must
be used a part of our MSAR Field Team

give carriage rides in GA. They are part dessert animal and can tolerate the
heat indexes better then a horse most of the time. If you have mules as
part of your SAR team, consider using them in hot humid searches. Just
saying...
Alice Ault TrotSAR’s SOP is; when the temperature or heat Index is expected to reach 98 degrees or higher, training activities will be cancelled. When temperatures are over 90 degrees, a 10 minute hydration break for self and mount must be taken hourly. When temperatures or heat index is over 98 degrees we generally respond to searches at night and deploy either in the dark or at first light, which dependent on the needs and planning of the AHJ or RA. We are in a high humidity region so the heat index plays a big role on searcher/horse safety protocol.
