As with anything involving a dog they must
work well as a search animal first. I was just pointing out that a lot of
cows and sheep got herded with working dogs and mounted stockmen in
the past so working a dog from a horse is not unique or even new. Working a discriminating scent dog from
horseback could involve a lot of frustration as both the horse and the dog hear
the same signals but may interpret them differently. If your dog works well in crowds of people
it may be a candidate for working from horseback. Unfortunately, few areas will let you let
the dog loose on the trails as you see if he will obey orders given from
horseback, or be distracted by wildlife in the area. Check the rules in your
practice area if it is off your own property. Many county, state, or
federal parks won’t let you work off leash except for real and the whole point is to work off leash ahead
