Although I agree with you Kate, it seems each posse/group can establish their own guidelines. It would be great if all insurance carriers would mandate helmets. Our Sherriff's posse members can wear whatever professional-looking attire we like for SAR except for matching orange vests. I am in the minority, but wear my ASTM helmet as often as allowed and am at home with our diverse group. We are required, however, to dress in the group uniform for parades and public service work which is a designated shirt with badge, dark blue jeans or pants, cowboy hat, embroidered saddle pad and breastcollar + headstall.
The likelihood of having a fall or head injury on pavement in a parade or serving the public is as great or more than SAR. I suggested the cowboy hats with helmets built in, but a change like this may take some time. There are some riders who think they can fall/roll safely off in a regular hat, but I can't afford to take the chance. Happy holidays to all! Dana
