Due to the nature of a helmet (ie thickness equals protection) I don't
think we will ever see a true Western HAT style helmet. However Troxel
is listening and trying to meet the need. Their new Cheyenne (leather
covered) and Sierra (canvas and suede covered) do not look like the
traditional helmet and are more Western in style than most helmets. I
own a new Sierra and it is not only comfortable but very easy to adjust-
a two finger "Pinch" type control at the back. I plan to get a canvas
brim to put over it for shade. The sheer SIZE of the helmet won't let it
look like my cowboy hat but I'll have protection and shade. It's like
with my boots- I don't wear my fancy boots for riding - I wear my safest
and most functional boots instead. :-)
In our county it is quickly becoming mandatory for all ground pounders
to at have helmets with their gear- which they may be required to wear
by the CP if the situation warrants. I don't think the same requirement
will be long in coming for Mounted units either. For the same reason-
safety.
