Rec.equestrian is a Usenet newsgroup. Usenet is a very old
system of discussion groups that predates the Internet. Many
ISPs carry a Usenet feed and many users read Usenet on their
own ISP using a newsreader (a client program). Most modern
e-mail clients and web browsers also can handle Usenet. But
many users today simply read Usenet newsgroups via the Usenet
archives, which currently reside on http://groups.google.com.
Note: You don't need to sign up with Google in order to read
rec.equestrian or any other newsgroup, but if you want to
post to a newsgroup via Google's web interface, then you do
need to sign up with Google. Or post via an ISP.
