I was thinking of taking this Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician
training and wonder if anyone has any experience or comments with this kind
of certification or this particular organization. It is a one-month program
in Maine and the $2,600 includes room and board.
David from DC
David - Since you specified WEMT, I'm assuming you're already EMT certified -
if not, WMA also offers the Wilderness First Responder Course. I took my
original course in 1994 and have NEVER regretted a minute of the time or
expense involved. I guess the biggest endorsement I can relate is what my
WEMT-P instructor told me when I asked about the difference between EMT and
WFR - his reply was: As an instructor for Paramedics, EMT's and Wilderness
Responders, I can only say if I were injured and saw my best EMT coming from
one direction and ANYONE from my Wilderness Courses coming from another
direction, I would PRAY that the WFR got to me first" - at which point a
working Fire Department Paramedic that had also taken the course stated: "Why
the hell didn't they teach us this stuff in Paramedics School!"
Wilderness Medical Associates and their programs are absolutely First Class
in every respect and I have been thankful for that on many occasions since
1994.
