While it's true that Johnny's is not owned by Monsanto, much of the
stock seed they sell comes from Seminis, which is owned by
Monsanto.....sad to say.
FEDCO put it to their customers (they are a co-op) as to whether or not
people wanted seed from Seminis/Monsanto since many varieties are now
held exclusively by Seminis, and the customer base voted against it.
More information in the catalog, first couple of pages.
I don't know about all the companies Leslie listed, but I do know that
most of them are either Seminis-owned or they buy their stock seed from
Seminis. Some, but by no means all, of the companies Seminis supplies
are listed on a Seminis webpage:
http://us.seminis.com/products/hg_dealer.asp I've no clue why the rest
are not there, but I know from my own research a few years ago that the
full list is a stunner.
It is indeed a sad state of affairs, but not a new one.....Burpee's fell
4 or 5 years ago (actually, I think it was Ball Seed that actually
bought out Burpee's, then sold out to Seminis, although Mr Ball still
seems to be 'in charge') when they became a Seminis subsidiary.
If you want a chilling view of the farming/gardening world to come, just
strike up a conversation with a Seminis sales rep.....
Save your OP seeds, folks!
