Thanks James, Chicago Hardy is on my list from Richard Moyer to check out,
but from what you say not a very tasty choice. My desire is to have tasty
fresh ones and then dry the surplus.
Got some that were small but delicious fresh, from a vendor at the
Greeneville Farmers Market. Will have to try and track her down.

Yes, I'm growing a few called Chicago (and some numbers after it, I don't
recall) figs because they are supposed to grow in Chicago. Unlike most
figs,
they bear on the same year's new growth from the roots. So although the
cold
bits them off at ground level every year, they come out with new growth
which,
if things are favorable, bear that first year and then get frozen when
winter
comes again.
They are not reliable and at best they are not remarkable, insipid until
they
are thoroughly dried. You have to add a lot of spices to the jam or it is
tasteless.
