Back in the dark ages, a friend and I rented a two-man auger to put
in fence posts as her fences were beyond ancient and the posts were
rotting off. Certainly not a way to keep steers out of the veggies!
I'd used them in the past and hadn't had a problem. It turns out her
little hills must have been one massive upheaval of stone from days
long past! We got down about 8" or so and the thing hit a massive
stone. Well, back then we were young and svelte and the auger
stopped but the top/handles didn't. We must have looked like a
whirly gig <g> The neighbor took pitty on us and came over with his
tractor and sunk the rest of the holes for us!

We're not messing with trying to grow anything in the so-called
soil we have around here! We're having top soil brought in. We too
have those massive rocks everywhere.
When we put up all the posts for the horse fence, we couldn't even
use a 2 man auger ti dig the holes. Ended up renting a mini
excavator.
