What would you consider a "mild" winter?
I guess a mild winter has a few frosts, but no period when the ground
freezes. Many many greens would survive that. If you have enough sunlight,
you could overwinter almost anything with a little protection. Do you grow
onions through the winter in the desert? Here garlic is started in the fall,
but onions can't be put out until spring....if they are out in the winter,
they freeze then rot in the spring.
I read somewhere not to stake tomatos in the desert so the >leaves can help
shade the flowers. And probably would have >to start them indoors to beat
the heat.
I stake mine to keep them off the ground. It's wet here, and any fruit that
lays on the ground is likely to rot. I guess that's not a problem in the
desert.
