Both. Definitely Western, and for obvious 19th century reasons have the right to call themselves Southern. Texas is so big, though. I spent most of the time, that I have spent there, many years ago. If the Mexican population has increased the same way, in areas, as have AZ & NM, then part of the Southern part of the state could be considered a 'third' category?
I consiuder parts of South Louisiana a kind of 'third" category. Their sympathies are certainly Southern, but the Cajun cutlure ceratinly sets it apart from the rest of the State, region, & country. I loved the time I spent in S. LA., 'could do anything; and the best food I've ever eaten...................................
