Our family (and more and more, friends of the family join in) holds an annual "sighting-in party" and many own the muff type ear protectors but a cheap pair of foam ear plugs are much better than nothing. For skeet I used to use a 12 gauge but a couple years ago switched to a 20 and my shoulder really appreciates it.

well, with all this talk of guns, this would be the right place to ask this question.

Rebecca, get a good pair of ear muffs designed for hearing protection when using guns or chainsaws. Do not skimp on price.

And know that while a twelve-gauge shotgun has more stopping power, a twenty-gauge shotgun with the correct barrel length and choke will get the same job done if your develop competency. Again, practice, practice, practice.
