All I can go from is my experience in the Ozarks. There is a health food
store in Ava that has twice monthly organic gardening meetings. I stumbled
upon it one Saturday while waiting for someone else. I casually met a
couple there that I ran into again at a farm tour later. At a pioneer show
I meet the woman who runs the store as she was showing how to cane a chair
and was invited to a monthly discussion. The local chapter of the Sierra
Club has almost monthly float trips in summer. Given a little time and
inclination I know I could have meet many people.
I also meet several people there that were friends of Genes. One in
particular could become a great friend to my wife, I really want those two
to meet.
My wife is a lot less interested in moving to Missouri that I am. She likes
shopping and the Starbucks drive through. She grew up poor on a 5000 acre
wheat farm in Washington and knows all about living on a farm and having to
do with little and considers living even a small piece of that life
returning to poverty.
In our early years she made almost all our bread, made clothes for herself
and the kids, canned and preserved all summer long. Now she is a special
education teacher and says all that stuff is behind her.
