The 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division has been
assigned to the US Army North for a year beginning 10/1. They are in
charge of homeland defense. The Defense Authorization Act of 2006 (500
billion and no one sneezed) lets the president declare martial law for
a myriad of reasons (war protests, terrorist incidents, natural
disasters).
There is some reason that this has been done. Maybe an election
problem, maybe bread lines.
