I just returned from Peru. I visited in a home in the mountains,
where I was served guinea pig. It was not bad, although it required
getting past the idea of eating what I have always thought of as a
rodent pet. In reality, guinea pigs have a vegetarian diet, so their
diet is cleaner than pigs or chickens. The texture and taste is
somewhat like rabbit.
The Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture encourages people to eat guinea
pigs, as they require a relatively small space and multiply rapidly.
