In the event anyone besides me cares..
Today, just by coincidence, I happened to come across another reference
to James Dickey and his inspirational trip. Doug Woodward, A GCA
(Georgia Canoe Association) member and Deliverance stunt double, had
met him at the home of Lewis King, the model for the movie Lewis-played
by Burt Reynolds. Anyway, the scoop is that on one famous trip down the
Coosawattee, in an area now under Carter's Lake, King and Dickey had
real trouble and difficulty making it down the class IV and V river and
almost didn't make it. They had to take out early in a wilderness area,
miles from their planned takeout location, and just as they left the
river came across some moonshiners. Instead of things going the way the
movie portrays them, the mountain folks actually helped them out of the
woods and back to their vehicles at the pickup site... So, that's what
happened on the actual trip, and then in hindsight, Dickey asked
himself, What if...and Deliverance was written..
