Subject: [Homestead] was Wind & solar power, now cold box/cooling tube

I will be looking at all this stuff in more detail in a few weeks when a
much smaller bunch of us will be going over to roof and finish the
shed. There were too many folks around the other day, with too many
questions, to get all the poking around I wanted, but quite a few of
them were new to the ideas or live far away, and I knew I'd be going
back/am local/could get more info later, so I mostly stayed out of the
way the day we were over there. When I go back, though, I'll share
whatever I glean....
I only know of one 'cooling tube' so far that's been successful;
ironically enough, it is in the very wet/humid Tidewater Virginia area.
My husband put that one in many years ago (34-35) for a fellow with more
money than most of us. It runs from the river to his basement some
hundred rods or so distant. I was just down there last summer and that
place is nice and cool. He had been worried somewhat about moisture
when it went in and Freeman added some extra ventilation about 3 years,
if I remember right, into the project, but when I talked to the guy last
year he said it's worked perfectly, so there are ways....One think about
that one is that it was some salvaged materials and the thing was, it
seemed to me, giant, probably 3' across. I remember Freeman building
big ol' screens to keep critters from using it as a runway.
I don't think we'd have that much of an issue here, although I'm just
off the coast where we catch a lot of rain. For that I try to be
grateful (it's not tornadoes.....or fires...) but it does bear watching
and I will make an extra effort to check it out when I'm over there
again and can see better/ask better questions.
Peter was talking yesterday of putting a video about his little house on
YouTube, but I don't think it's been done yet. If so, I couldn't find
it, but since I have dialup have never tried to navigate YouTube before
and it's possible I missed it. So I will ask about that also when I go
again.
Susan Jane, where it's gonna rain even more, so they say....
