Have you heard the reason we "knock wood"? Celia tells me that it's
Irish in origin, where most folks believe strongly in "the little
people". These "little people" (the gnomes and faeries) are most
interested in causing trouble, so if they hear us talking about some
bad luck event (such as an early freeze), they'll make it happen!
Knocking on wood, confuses their hearing so they don't cause trouble.
Maybe you knew all that.
