Three weeks ago I tapped two soft maple in my backyard. Today I turn sap
to syrup over a small fire pit dug yesterday through a two-inch frost
with pick and shovel. Coals are building as I write. I can't be long.
Of the fifteen gallons of sap I expect only a couple pints of syrup but
that isn't why I do it. There isn't anything that compares to a campfire
and its cleansing smoke after a long winter. Happy Spring all.
