I've thought quite a bit about building an outdoor oven, not just for
pizzas, although I dearly love to make a Chicago-style thick crust pizza.
Yes, there are those heathens amongst us who believe that Chicago improved
upon this divine delicacy. ;) But I would love to make bread in one too. I
think my hearth loaf potato bread would quite possibly be exquisite coming
out of such an oven.
Some years ago, I picked up Kiko Denzer's book, Build Your Own Earth Oven.
At the time I bought the book, I lived on a homestead with heavy clay based
soil, which would have been quite good for such an endeavor. Where I live
NOW, I have a sandy loam soil that is VERY sandy and not at all suitable for
making cob. SO, the very simple mud oven that I'd thought I would build will
not work here, without going out to buy the appropriate soil, and what's the
fun of that? LOL! If I'm going to buy the materials, I might as well make
something that will last longer than mud.
I still have too many more pressing projects before I can get to the fun of
building an outdoor oven. But that project is still something I hope to do
eventually.
I'm eagerly awaiting photos. :)
