I believe that after I pulled the pump I would tie to something
stable and then drop a strong line, like a mason's string with a
weight attached and some small pieces of cloth tied in every five or
ten feet. Drop to bottom, then pull up and see how much water is down
there. Might be enough to set the new pump lower. Or might be so
little that it is time to dig that well deeper or dig a new one.
