well, the reason i'd thought of it in the first place is because peaceful valley has it listed as a forage crop in their catalog.
something else i didn't know, that i just recently got an awful lesson on, is that horses cannot eat fairly big quantities of oak buds either. one of my horses were eating the buds off some limbs my husband was trimming from the tree, it was a lot of buds, i'd say half a bucketfull, and it caused his liver and kidneys to shut down and he did die from internal bleeding and organ failure about a week later :( i didn't think he would eat something that wouldn't be good for him, but he was gobbling them up like they were candy and i so so wish i had known better. there was a mare we were keeping for a friend who was being really bossy toward him, not letting him graze with them and running him away from every spot he tried to eat - i didn't know how serious it was at the time, didn't know he wasn't getting to eat much at all - and that is why he ate so many of the buds. terrible terrible way to learn something :(
