Eureka, Fieldbrook, Arcata and Fortuna all have about 300 plus growing days a year. You know, I'm growing Chinese peas, and I don't know if people realize how hardy they are. I planted them before Thankgiving, and I've already had to give them a trellis. They made it through 17 degrees, albeit with a partial cover. In the Eureka area you should really be able to clean up, harvesting peas in April, maybe earlier if you give them a plastic cover to heat things up.

It sounds and looks idyllic. There's not a tree in sight, but acacia grows fast.
The area to the west of the freeway heading through Arcata is called "The Bottoms." Lots of dairy, no irrigation needed, good pasture 24/7 12 months of the year. There are some really great organic farms, bulb farms and native plant nurseries located in The Bottoms. The east side of the freeway is more homes, not too much land available.
If you decide to look around the area, let me know and I'll give you the skinny on any area you are looking at.The hard part is always finding a small piece of farm land. I just need 2 acres to keep one ram and three ewes. There's little need for a garden, except for peas! Of course we'll probably do it anyway, just because it's fun.
