Mexican farmers support organic. Dealing with sick workers is
expensive. Field foremen carry drugs and syringes to treat workers.
Absenteeism is costly.
All the developments have been predictable. A national standard was
inevitable and useful in spite of its weaknesses and unfairness to
some producers. Organic is a win-win deal for the people. We all win
with cleaner water and air. It is a matter of time. How many years
for the soil to heal? How many years before the chemical effects become benign?
There is a highly probably connection between chemical use on crops
and impotence and sterility. The popularity of sexuality enhancement
drugs may well be because of chemical effects. Atrazine is a likely
culprit. Remember the Minnesota frogs? That was the canary in the mineshaft.
So I am in favor of organic food becoming mainstream in spite of the
predictable negatives. Cleaner soil, cleaner air, healthier people
are worth paying a higher price.
Plant a garden and eat the results.
