I guess I'm really looking for a good mag that reports on current events.
Print media is too slow for current events but better for deeper
insight. I read current news online. For daily events reported
reliably I read The New York Times but am frustrated by their new
for-pay-only columnist offerings. Their Sunday Magazine always has
good in-depth subjects. I read the Washington Post for political
stuff. For the right side viewpoint I read National Review Online and
Townhall Conservative. For opinions on just about everything I go to
the Drudge Report and scroll down to their list of contributing
writers where I read William Buckley Jr., Molly Ivins and many others
between those steady bookends. A friend sends me his old copies of
Jim Hightower's Hightower Lowdown.
I vacillate on keeping my Utne Reader subscription. They gather
stories from other mags. They have a predictably left-leaning
editorial position so they are useful to see that side of issues and
they offer interesting stories I don't see elsewhere. But much of
their material is not of interest to me, maybe because their
editorial slant leans urban female.
I regret that down here in the holler I don't get NPR reception. I
miss The Diane Rehm show. One of these days I will take the time and
spend the money to get one of the satellite radio services.
