This is especially true if, as in the book, those ten thousand simply dropped
out without a trace. We could lose ten thousand and a lot more without it
upseting the status quo. But it would be a different story if that many
people,
as you put it, dropped below the tax collector's radar but still were a part
of the culture as a whole.
