In 1954, Schwinn mounted a Smith-type steam generator on one of their
bicycle models---it powered a mini-steam engine.
And in 1952 or 1953 I had a Willy Messerschmitt variable-compression
diesel that powered a bicycle. The compression was lowered for starting
by a cable from one of the bicycle handles. The cable rotated the
diesel cylinder-head. After the toy 3/4 horsepower diesel started, the
cable was released to restore normal compression and power.
Annoying as hell, can't even find a reference to these two little gems
in the stupid search engines.
