Forgot to add a sand-filter needs backwashing---usually they have a slow
flow-rate, and a downstream holding tank to accumulate filtered water is
often a good idea.
Used to own a marina on Lake Livingston, Texas, well-water quality was
atrocious, had to use a specialized sand filter to take out iron and
hydrogen sulfide.
Here is a single-tank sand filter with a layer of activated carbon and
filter cloth, and of course a valve for backwashing. This has a pretty
good flow-rate.
