Cohousing communities and intentional communities share some
characteristics but are different in many way.
Cohousing groups get together and plan their venture. Individuals own their
own energy-efficient houses but typically share community gardens.
Some new ICs have sprung up over the last decade but most are well
established and have various rules for membership, which may include giving
your vehicle to the community and sharing a house with others, all of which
are owned by the community as an entity.
There are a huge number of ICs in the USA and around the world. Here is
where you begin to learn about them: http://www.ic.org/
