Like set-and-forget trees, almost set-and-forget food perennials,
set-and-forget wild turkeys should have a place in your semi-wild
meat-on-the-hoof food supply.
You should give them some initial protection as purchased chicks, and
after their early release, provide some food to keep them around---don't
worry about adult night-time shelter, they do just fine perching in a
tree, and will forage for 99 peercent of their food. The set-and-forget
part comes from their wildfowl ability to replicate themselves in the wild..
It will be a relief on your time and pocketbook to get away from those
suicidal big-breasted turkeys deviloped for the factory-farm.
There are a lot of more primitive, self-sufficient turkey breeds
around---find them at www.albc-usa.org.
