The phrase has the sense of the woman being a 'help' 'as his opposite'. In
this particular case, the 'opposite' does not indicate an enemy or rival, but
rather someone 'different'. When seen in light of the word 'help' I think we
can safely say that the phrase means 'a help to match him'.
