Actually, the sky is like a hard dome. Meteors will bounce off if they don't
enter the atmosphere at certain angles. The space shuttle has to be very
careful when re-entering the atmosphere for this very reason. The atmosphere
also entraps gasses like oxygen, and certain spectrums of light, which keep
us all from dying. I'm not suggesting the author of Genesis was conscious of
any of this, but it bears pointing out.
