Shalom,
In HALOT, p. 721, s.v. NFQIY, sense 1 has "*unmarried*, free."
I'm suspecting that this is a mistranslation of HALAT for the following
reasons:
1. "unmarried" does not fit any of the contexts of the references cited
by HALOT (Gen. 24:41; Jos 2:17, 20, 1K 15:22) and it is impossible for Deut.
24:5, which is also cited under sense 1.
2. Neither Holladay, BDB, nor DCH list "unmarried" as a sense of NFQIY.
Could someone who has access to HALAT, check the German and see if it really
reads, "unmarried?"
