Karl:It is worth pointing out that DAVAR does not seem to mean "word" in the sense of an individual lexical or phonological item. Nor does 'IMRA. This is important because I have seen people using verses like Proverbs 30:5,6 as an argument for word for word translation. But these verses are not about words in that sense, but about messages or utterances.
When we read from the TaNaK we are not translating
into English.
The art does not apply when the brain is already wired
for
Hebrew; but "words", "utterances," "statements" are
permissible translations of DBR. There are not ten commandments,
so the variant numbering has nothing to do with a so-called
rabbinic misunderstanding of the Hebrew word.
