Judges 18:30 records that *Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh,And 1 Kings 12:31 tells us of another such line of priests, or perhaps the same one as they also served at the city of Dan - although if so the author's complaint "even though they were not Levites" is an exaggeration, for Jonathan was a Levite but not a descendant of Aaron. Of course both of these were "renegade" priesthoods not recognised by the Jerusalem authorities. What makes the priesthood of David's sons different is that it was recognised by the ultimate authority in Jerusalem, its king.
he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the
captivity of the land.* so there was recorded at least one other non-Aaronide
line of priests.
