I have a question for all of you discourse analysis aficionados out
there. Is there any insight from discourse/linguistic theory which would
clarify the discourse function of the BH particle "hoy?" This particle
is variously translated as "woe," "alas," "hey," etc. A variety of
original settings for the term have also been proposed, including, but
not limited to, the wisdom tradition, and funeral lamentation. Is there
any factor that would tip the balances of translation in the direction
of one meaning over another? Thanks in advance for your help.
