Subject: [b-hebrew] more foiled antiquities thefts
Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 20:20:05 +0300
Another bust involved an attempt to sell bones from four
illegally recovered ossuaries near `Issawiya, inscribed with
names such as Hananiah and Shalom. This is the first time
(according to IAA officer Ganor) whereby antiquities thieves
are attempting to sell ancient bones to ultraorthodox Jews. I
would also point out that claims over desecration of Jewish
bones are often the cause of active protests by some
ultraorthodox Jews against various archaeological digs in
Israel.
