Note that the LXX does the same thing:
... ISCUROTEROS ESTIN H ASQENHS EI OLIGOI EISIN H POLLOI ...
NUM. 13:18 KAI OYESQE THN GHN TIS ESTIN KAI TON LAON TON EGKAQHMENON EP'
AUTHS EI ISCUROTEROS ESTIN H ASQENHS EI OLIGOI EISIN H POLLOI ,
Often English translations follow the LXX without telling you about it :-)
