dear friends,
i haven't been able to read carefully the discussion so far re VSO. but
just a couple of comments while i have the chance:
(1) i proposed a much more subtle analysis in my doctoral dissertation (U
of Toronto 1995) in which I argued for a V2 (read "verb-second") analysis,
comparable in many respects to the germanic phenomenon. (unfortunately
it's in WordPerfect, and without the graphics; but i'm trying to make a
version available, and there is still the Michigan service too.)
(2) a quick and dirty idea of the approach and its value can be found in
my paper in the volume "The Verbless Clause in Biblical Hebrew" (1999). i
find the idea of a dummy position enlightening these days....
(Eisenbrauns, edited by C. Miller.)
(3) Liz: you don't know **anyone** who does hebrew and chomsky ... ?? ;-)

Look for massive consolidation and brutal job cuts ahead.
It won't be pretty.
