Well, as a contributor I have a vested interest. Having said that, it is
an excellent resource for general overviews of all sorts of
archaeological, geographical, historical, sociological, and textual
information on the Near East. Coming out of the American Schools of
Oriental Research, it is particularly strong on the Levant, and largely
represents American scholarship, but still quite useful.
At the price Eisenbrauns is offering it, well worth the investment.
A more literary-oriented resource is the Scribner's compilation on the
Ancient Near East, edited by Jack Sasson. It is now published in a
two-volume set, occasionally on sale at places like Dove Booksellers,
and is also very useful.
